[SUDDENLY DEDENNE ALL OVER THE VIDEO FEED. SUDDENLY BUTTON SMASHING AND WEIRD SOUNDS. SUDDENLY -]

Mickey? Where'd you put the gear? I gotta call Alphonse!

[SUDDENLY DEDENNE'S SMILING FACE. SUDDENLY DEDENNE PUSHING THE GEAR FURTHER AND FURTHER AWAY FROM ITSELF. SUDDEN TIPPING?? SUDDEN FALLING!!

If Rin had not been standing by the bookshelf, he would have avoided his terrible fate. Dedenne sat on top on the shelf, wearing a most devious grin. Rin looks up (too late), the camera's view becomes horribly lopsided and - hey look, it's Rin! Oh no, watch out -- BAM goes the gear! SPLAT, right on Rin's upturned face.

His shriek of pain could be heard for miles around.]

[... Uh. Naoya considers not responding, but considering this is one of his coworkers... he'll call back.]

... Rin? What happened?

[He can kind of guess, but still.]

[...He's hesitant to turn on the camera for the gear but... what was the point of avoiding it anyway? It was going to take a while for the bruise to go away. The area around his left eye is already swollen and just beginning to change color.]

Mickey ... dropped the gear. On my face. [He is giving that little gerbil the stink eyes right now.]

... You should put ice on that. It's already swelling, but you can reduce it somewhat by treating it fast.

[That sounds like a great idea! - Oh. Never mind.]

Shit... I don't think I have any ice in the freezer. Maybe I could use frozen veggies?

Those usually work just fine. If the swelling doesn't go down by tomorrow or the day after, though, you should go get it looked at.

A shame our abilities aren't working again, or I'd just heal it for you.

[Rin grumbles a bit about having to carry around a bag of frozen veggies to his face, but he can see the logic behind Naoya's advice. He fumbles around with the gear as he picks it up and carries it with him to the kitchen. With as little grace as possible, he flops it onto the kitchen counter as he continues on his way to the fridge.]

Even I had my abilities, I wouldn't be banged up because of a phone.

[Just as he predicted, the ice tray is filled with water and not what he wanted. He reaches for the smallest bag of snow peas he can find and almost slaps the whole thing on his face. That would have been a bad idea... He grabs a paper towel and wraps the bag up first. Now it's ready to start cooling down the worst of the swelling.]

...You had healing powers or somethin'?

Of a sort. I had a number of different skills I could use - I developed a way to harness the power of demons so that even someone like a child could use them, if they could defeat the demon inside of their device first.

[In retrospect maybe he should have told that last part to the Shomonkai before he gave them the COMPs, but... eh.]

[Rin turns his full attention back to the gear. Did he hear that right?]

You harvested demon powers and put them in devices...?

More specifically I contracted demons and found a way to store them as data, but yes.

You turned demons into data?

[The very thought sends a shiver up his spine.]

So what were you? A demon tamer?

... That's not an inaccurate term, though I'm guessing it's something more specific to your world. Summoner would be the more common term where I'm from, though most of the world didn't know demons existed until... very shortly before I came here.

Well, a demon tamer can summon demons where I'm from. And they usually make them into familiars, not turn 'em into data.

[NAOYA SURE IS SOUNDING OMINOUS... As surreal as it was to find himself speaking to someone who knew about demons, it was also more than a little intriguing.]

My world is a little like that too. People don't normally know about 'em until they come in contact with 'em.

[Still...] Why'd you have to turn 'em into data?

Because that's how the needed rituals are parsed. The circles are drawn using data inside of the COMP, and the emotional energy needed is pulled from the internet.

[He knows it sounds insane, but it works, so...]

[...Does that mean NAOYA COULD TURN RIN INTO DATA... N-No, that's silly. Rin's not a summons... Ahahah...]

That really sounds like how a tamer works their stuff. They gotta draw a magic circle and they need something - I guess emotional stuff.

[He thinks this over for a second. His decision is instantaneous.] That's pretty cool! So how many demons do y'have workin' with you?

Each COMP only has a limited amount of storage space, so about ten or so is the limit for a single COMP. It's only capable of handling two demons out at a time though. It could have been more, but keeping everything separate so that no unfortunate accidents occur was difficult enough.

Though personally I know how to summon... a great many. I did have a Garuda and a Behemoth before I came here. I'm rather fond of the Avian family of demons. Their racial ability allows me to get around much faster than even I can on my own.

[WHOOOOOOOOSH, right over Rin's head.]

A - what? Behemoth? Garuda? You move fast?

... A Behemoth is like a very large hippo that sits upright. A Garuda is like a vaguely man-shaped bird. And Avian demons have the racial ability of Flight, which increases their summoner's speed.

So. Demon hippo. Bird demon. And a another one that's just fast and gives you a speed boost.

[Did he get all that? Rin tries to to think of the equivalent in his world, but comes up short.]

I've never heard or seen demons like that, but that's gotta be pretty intense.

Ah - Garuda is an Avian demon. It's a certain family of demons.

And... they can be... but only if you don't know how to handle them.

[Bird demons. Yeesh.]

Okay? Glad I don't have to worry about any of that. - Hey, none of your demons came through yesterday, right?

No, they didn't. I was wondering if they would, but I didn't see any, and I didn't hear about any. It's almost disappointing.

Wha? Wouldn't it be better if they didn't come here at all?

Maybe, though it would be interesting to see if they could cross over worlds. They're not from the same one I am, though it's connected... so I was curious as to see if it would be easy enough to summon them here.

[Rin should be concerned. Maybe he should stop talking to the clearly insane gentleman with the cool-talking voice. Buuuut since this isn't a life-or-death situation ALL MUST BE WELL.]
